Motivation:
Use Case Description:
neutrality by 2030 – to the already-operational STiDS (Szeged & Timișoara Data Space), which was built and validated under the DS4SSCC Deployment Call 2 (Grant Agreement 101123342). The pilot establishes Miskolc as the third node in a cross-border, FIWARE/NGSI-LD data space that already spans Hungary and Romania, without rebuilding any infrastructure from scratch.
Miskolc is an ideal fit for this call for three reasons. First, it has acute and measurable urban challenges – winter smog episodes and an under-optimised public transport network – where a data space delivers immediate value. Second, it already owns the data: a 60-sensor air quality network and MVK's real-time tram telematics are live and generating data today, but siloed in local systems with no interoperability layer. Third, it has strong institutional readiness: as one of 100 EU Mission Cities, Miskolc signed a City Climate Contract (CCC) and produced a 2030 Climate Neutrality Action Plan that explicitly calls for a digital monitoring infrastructure of exactly the kind STiDS-Mi delivers.
The MODENT Horizon Europe project (grant HORIZON-RIA-SGA-NZC-101121530), already active at Miskolc, provides the specification blueprint; this pilot implements it as a live, cross-border data space.
Use Case 1 – Air Quality / Zero Pollution
Miskolc sits in a valley that traps cold air and particulates in winter, causing smog episodes that regularly breach EU air quality thresholds. The city operates 60 sensors measuring PM10, PM2.5, CO2, temperature, humidity and meteorological variables, visible at miskolc.pmmonitoring.hu. STiDS-Mi ingests this sensor stream via Apache NiFi, maps it to the FIWARE AirQualityObserved Smart Data Model, and publishes it through the Miskolc CKAN data portal and the STiDS cross-border data space. UPT (University of Timișoara), which developed the AQI forecasting model for Timișoara under STiDS, will adapt the model for Miskolc's sensor topology, enabling AI-based smog-event prediction. Cross-border comparison with Timișoara's validated AQ dataset creates a first-of-its-kind HU–RO environmental benchmarking layer.
Use Case 2 – Sustainable Mobility
MVK Zrt. operates trams and a full bus fleet in Miskolc. It provides: GTFS static schedules (published at valosidoben.mvkzrt.hu), real-time GPS tracking (if the integration can be carried out following an ongoing assessment of the data source system), and infrared passenger counting per door per stop. Today these datasets are available only
within MVK's operational systems. STiDS-Mi aims to integrate all three via NGSI-LD (Smart Data Models) and connects them to the STiDS cross-border data space, enabling direct benchmarking with SZKT Szeged's mobility data – the first cross-city public transport data comparison in the region within a GDPR-compliant, controlled data space.
Beyond city-level outputs, STiDS-Mi creates a joint value layer across all three cities: shared AQ and mobility data flows through the FIWARE Data Space Connector under ABAC policies, allowing authorised sharing of each city’s datasets with each other. This makes STiDS the first three-city, two-country DS4SSCC data space, and the first Cross-border data space corridor in the HU–RO region.
