DS4SSCC welcomes seven new pilots as its fourth deployment round begins
The European Data Space for Smart Communities (DS4SSCC) has launched its fourth round of pilot projects, welcoming seven new pilots involving cities, regions and technology partners across ten European countries.
While the eleven existing DS4SSCC pilots are demonstrating their data space use cases over a period of 16 to 18 months, the seven new pilots will work within a focused three month timeframe. This fourth round places a stronger emphasis on replication, scalability and cross-border collaboration. Several projects will build on solutions developed during previous DS4SSCC pilot rounds, extending them to new locations and demonstrating how existing data space infrastructure and services can be reused across different municipal contexts.
Meet the seven new pilots:
UrbanHive - Slovenia and Croatia
UrbanHive brings together Ajdovščina, Kranj, Celje and Tržič in Slovenia and Pula in Croatia. Building on the existing UrbanMind data space, the project will expand and replicate solutions for predictive traffic management and environmental monitoring. It will also integrate new data sources, develop services for municipal departments and citizens, and validate federation with other European data spaces.
NEXCITY - Spain and The Netherlands
NEXCITY connects Valencia (Spain) and Rotterdam (The Netherlands) through a shared urban data space supporting mobility, environmental and spatial-planning decisions. The pilot will validate seven use cases across sustainable mobility, weather and climate resilience, zero pollution and the New European Bauhaus. It will combine more than 15 types of urban data and use advanced simulations to help cities assess scenarios related to traffic, air quality, heat stress, and noise.
BeatTheHeat II - Greece and Italy
BeatTheHeat II expands the existing BeatTheHeat pilot to Kalamata (Greece) and Codogno (Italy). The project will develop and reuse services addressing urban heat, climate resilience, and sustainable mobility. Its activities include urban heat island mapping, thermal comfort analysis, climate-risk tools, and sustainable routing services. The pilot will also document the onboarding process to make it easier for additional communities to join and reuse the data space.
DYNAMO - Spain, Latvia and The Netherlands
DYNAMO brings together the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, Riga (Latvia) and Fryslân (The Netherlands). The pilot will develop an intelligent system that uses data on transport occupancy, traffic, fleet availability, events, weather and incidents to help cities adapt public transport and shared-mobility services to real-time demand. It aims to reduce congestion and emissions while improving transport efficiency and the quality of mobility services.
EMOVA – Spain and Italy
EMOVA will extend existing data space infrastructure in Barcelona and demonstrate interoperability with Genoa’s urban data systems. The project focuses on the data needed to design and evaluate mobility and environmental policies. Its use cases will support the assessment of low-emission zones in Barcelona and the management of freight corridors between the port and the city of Genoa.
OmniFlow – Latvia and Lithuania
OmniFlow will deploy and validate a cross-border mobility data space connecting Jelgava (Latvia) and Šiauliai (Lithuania). Its virtual traffic sensor service will combine aggregated mobile-network data with existing road-sensor information, allowing municipalities to estimate vehicle flows without installing additional physical infrastructure. The project will support transport planning, public transport optimisation, and infrastructure prioritisation across urban and surrounding rural areas.
STiDS-Mi – Romania and Hungary
STiDS-Mi will connect Miskolc (Hungary) to the operational Szeged (Hungary) and Timișoara (Romania) Data Space (STiDS pilot). The project will integrate Miskolc’s air-quality sensor network and public transport data into a cross-border data space supporting zero-pollution and sustainable-mobility objectives. It will enable AI-supported smog prediction and the comparison of environmental and public transport data between the three cities.
