Four New Pilots Join the European Data Space for Smart Communities
We’re thrilled to welcome four new pilot initiatives to the DS4SSCC-DEP project following our second Open Call. These pilots will implement cutting-edge data space solutions across Europe to tackle urgent urban challenges—from mobility and pollution control to energy transition and climate resilience.
Each pilot brings a unique, cross-sectoral approach to data sharing, aligning with our broader mission to establish a federated, interoperable ecosystem for smart communities.
Meet the New Pilots
Szeged & Timișoara Data Space (STiDS)
This cross-border collaboration between Hungary and Romania will deploy a shared data space for real-time mobility optimization and pollution management, improving daily life for citizens in both cities.
BeatTheHeat
In response to intensifying heatwaves, Cartagena, Naples, and Taranto will leverage climate data, IoT sensors, and predictive analytics to mitigate temperature impacts, enhance urban resilience, and protect public health.
CitizenCity
Eindhoven, Oulu, and Álava are pioneering participatory digital environments. Through AI-driven tools and smart mobility labs, CitizenCity aims to boost civic engagement and co-create smarter, safer cities.
Data Spaces for Positive Energy Districts (DS4PED)
Led by GATE Institute (Sofia University), DS4PED will transform Rubí and Sofia into sustainable, data-enabled energy pioneers. The pilot introduces tokenised renewable energy trading, smart grid integration, and real-time energy traceability to enable Positive Energy Districts—neighbourhoods that generate more energy than they consume.
Each city focuses on tailored local solutions. In Rubí, solar-powered EV charging, ZEAC tokens, and automated certification will make energy access greener and more equitable. Meanwhile, Sofia will use geospatial, mobility, and energy data to assess solar potential, urban heat, and air quality—empowering climate-resilient urban planning through collaboration with citizens and stakeholders.
As these four pilots begin their 18-month journey, they join our growing network of innovative communities working to build Europe’s digital future. With continued support and knowledge sharing, their results will serve as scalable models for cities across the continent.
Stay tuned for updates as we continue to scale innovation, one pilot at a time.
